Waste managment

Monitoring the total volume of organic waste produced on campus is crucial for assessing the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives and identifying areas for improvement.

Waste management team conducts regular audits of waste streams to assess the types and quantities of waste generated, identifying trends and areas for improvement gather feedback on the 3R program’s effectiveness and areas for enhancement, ensuring continuous improvement.

Progress is shared with the campus community through newsletters or social media, highlighting successes and future goals.

According to recent statistics, almost 90% of organic waste have been recycled.

1 Navoi State Pedagogical Institute has a dedicated waste management team responsible for overseeing waste collection, recycling, and disposal across the campus.

Responsibilities:

Ensuring proper sorting and separation of waste streams (e.g. paper, plastic, compost).

Coordinating with local waste/recycling providers for pickup and processing.

Implementing waste reduction and recycling programs campus-wide.

Educating the campus community on best practices for waste management.

Tracking waste volumes and diversion rates to measure progress.

Ensuring compliance with all relevant environmental regulations.

Staffing: This department includes custodial staff, grounds crew, and administrative personnel to oversee operations.

Funding: Waste management is funded through the institute’s sustainability budget.

NSPI waste management team collaborates closely with student groups, faculty, and other campus stakeholders to promote behavior change and increase recycling/composting participation and organize outreach programs.

The main goals of a waste management team include:

Waste Reduction and Diversion:

Minimize the overall waste generated across campus through education and behavior change initiatives.

Maximize the diversion of waste from landfills through effective recycling, composting, and other recycling programs.

Set and work towards ambitious waste diversion rate targets (e.g. 75% diversion).

Sustainability and Environmental Impact:

Reduce the campus’s environmental footprint associated with waste disposal.

Support the university’s broader sustainability and climate action goals.

Contribute to the institution’s transition towards zero-waste or carbon neutrality.

Operational Efficiency:

Establish streamlined and cost-effective waste collection and transportation logistics.

Optimize storage, compaction, and processing of different waste streams.

Continuously evaluate and improve waste management infrastructure and processes.

Regulatory Compliance:

Ensure the campus is meeting all relevant federal, state, and local waste regulations.

Stay up-to-date on evolving environmental policies and standards.

Avoid any fines or penalties related to improper waste handling.

Campus Engagement and Education:

Raise awareness about sustainable waste practices among students, faculty, and staff.

Facilitate behavior change through targeted campaigns and outreach programs.

Collaborate with academic departments on waste-related research and curriculum.

Continuous Improvement:

Track and analyze waste data to identify optimization opportunities.

Pilot and scale new waste reduction, reuse, and recycling initiatives.

Benchmark performance against peer institutions and industry best practices.

Navoi State Pedagogical Institute has the agreement with local waste management company called “Navoi Stimul”. The waste which can not be recycled by our institute are taken on regular basis by this company for recycling process. (https://orginfo.uz/organization/941c570ef707/#google_vignette)

2 NSPI always strives to treat inorganic waste on a campus by involving several strategies to manage, recycle, and dispose of materials safely and sustainably.

  1. Waste Segregation

Color-Coded Bins: Use separate bins for different types of waste (e.g., metals, glass, plastics).

Color-coded bins are placed across the campus to collect separately different types of waste (metals, glass, plastics) and labeled with clear signage to improve recycling rates.

  1. Recycling Programs

Partnerships: Collaborate with local recycling facilities to ensure proper processing of inorganic materials.

Navoi State Pedagogical Institute collaborate with local company called “Utilizatsiya uz”  (https://utilizatsiya.uz/) which they pick up the waste produced by our laboratories .

Moreover, Waste Management Team of the institute runs awareness campaigns to educate the campus community about what can be recycled and how to do it correctly.

  1. Collection and Storage

There is a specific schedule for frequent pickups of recyclable materials to prevent overflow and contamination. (Navoi Stimul, Utilizatsiya uz)

Designated areas are available at campus to ensure that inorganic waste is stored in safe, = until it can be processed.

  1. Reuse Initiatives

Waste Management team organizes events to collect and donate usable items (e.g., electronics, furniture) and host workshops to teach skills for repairing items instead of discarding them.

  1. Education and Engagement

Moreover, the team offers sessions on the importance of reducing inorganic waste and the recycling process

and create programs that reward departments or individuals for effective waste management practices.

  1. Monitoring and Feedback

Regular audits are conducted to assess waste generation and identify areas for improvement.

Treating toxic waste on a campus requires careful planning and adherence to safety regulations. Considering that Navoi State Pedagogical Institute has implemented several strategies for managing and treating toxic waste effectively:

  1. Identification and Classification

All toxic substances and waste containers are clearly labeled to prevent accidental exposure.

  1. Waste Segregation

Designated containers are used for different types of toxic waste (e.g., chemicals, batteries, electronic waste) and implemented a color-coding system to easily identify hazardous waste.

  1. Safe Storage

Toxic waste is stored in secure locations, well-ventilated areas away from high-traffic zones.

  1. Training and Awareness

Waste management team provides regular training for staff and students on the hazards of toxic waste and proper handling techniques.

  1. Proper Disposal

NSPI has established partnerships with licensed hazardous waste disposal companies such as “Utilizatsiya uz”, (https://utilizatsiya.uz/) “Navoi Stimul”, (https://orginfo.uz/) “Zero waste”, ( https://orginfo.uz/)   “Jizzah akumlator zavodi” (https://jaz.uz/uz ) for safe removal and treatment of toxic waste.

  1. 6. Monitoring and Auditing

Waste management team conducts periodic audits to assess the management of toxic waste and identify areas for improvement and maintain detailed records of toxic waste generation, storage, and disposal for compliance purposes.

4 Sewage Disposal

Proper sewage disposal on a campus is essential for maintaining hygiene, environmental safety, and public health. Therefore, NSPI has some methods to ensure effective sewage management:

  1. Sewage System Design

Sewage system of our campus is designed by the local company “Issiqlik manbai” (https://navim.uz/) to handle the volume of waste generated by the campus.

Designed system separates greywater (from sinks and showers) from blackwater (from toilets) for more efficient treatment.

  1. Regular Maintenance

Local company “Issiqlik manbai” (https://navim.uz/) conducts regular inspections of sewage systems to identify and address any leaks, blockages, or deterioration and schedule regular pump-out services for septic systems or holding tanks to prevent overflow.

  1.  Wastewater Recycling

NSPI  treat and reuse greywater for irrigation or toilet flushing, reducing overall water consumption.

Rainwater Harvesting: Collect rainwater to supplement water needs, reducing pressure on sewage systems.

  1. Public Awareness and Education

Academic staff of our institute educates students and staff about the importance of proper sewage disposal and hygiene practices. Moreover, they provide clear guidelines on what can and cannot be disposed of in toilets and sinks.

  1.  Feedback Mechanisms

Waste Management Team conduct surveys to assess community awareness and satisfaction with sewage disposal practices.
